Rochester Sidewalk Snowplow

With all the snow we have been getting here in Rochester the sidewalk snowplow has been by a few times. I think the plow and driver are pretty cool and retro looking complete with the plowman wearing the traditional cap so I had to get a picture. Jen knew I wanted to catch him so she yelled at me to get the camera when she happened to see him heading down the opposing sidewalk. I was able to get him when he came down our side:

I LOVE these guys. Growing up in Rochester, I never knew that this was an unknown phenomonon to people in other parts of the country. But of course, why would they need sidewalk snowplows?
Big storm this morning and my sidewalks were clear by 8:00am.

In the 60’s & 70’s, when I was growing up in Rochester, these plows would typically come by in the middle of the night where I lived, in the Maplewood Park area. As it sped down our street, at what seemed a very high rate of speed, the dry snow would fly over the entire tractor, creating a very spectacular looking scene, hiding the identity of the driver, and thusly earning the driver the nickname of “The Phantom”, from my brother and I. If either one of us was awake, and heard “The Phantom” coming, we would awaken the other, as we both enjoyed watching him go by. Thanks Mark!
